ONE Source Educational Resources & Advocacy

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ADVOCATE

As a parent and guardian you are your child's greatest advocate. There is no more of an important time to be a vocal advocate for your child as when they begin to experience academic difficulties. The pursuit of accessing the academic support your child needs can be a long, tough road with many obstacles. Parents and guardians often experience tremendous difficulty in their attempt to have their child's academic needs met. Schools may try to postpone evaluating a student for special education services stating they will try Response to Intervention (RTI) first. A parent or guardian's lack of knowledge of RTI or the special education process puts their child at risk of being pushed aside.

As your child's greatest advocate, you need an experienced, professional advocate by your side to achieve your most important mission: to have your child educated.

5 Mistakes Parents & Guardians Commonly Make in Dealing with the Committee of Special Education

1. Parents and guardians do not know they are allowed to bring an advocate to meetings with them, or an advocate can communicate with other service providers, teachers, and members at the district level on their behalf.

2. Parents who do know they can bring an advocate to a meeting become fearful of upsetting the district who they feel has the authority to restrict services for their child.

3. When a parent or guardian brings an advocate to a meeting, the advocate is usually a friend who has little to no experience regarding procedure and processes.

4. Parents and guardians do not know the right questions to ask at IEP meetings.

5. Feeling displeased, hopeless, and powerless, parents walk away from IEP meetings where program decisions are made for their child they do not agree with.

5 Reasons Why We're Different Than Other Advocates

1. Our team has sat at the Committee of Special Education meeting table as parents, teachers, administrators, and advocates in different counties and states.

2. Our team has helped families from New York to California. We have built an outstanding reputation with and between the school districts and the parents creating an outstanding program for the child.

3. Our team knows how to read and interpret evaluation scores, analyze data, measure Goals and Objectives, and ask the right questions.

4. Our goal is to build a collaborative team with you, the parent, and your school district - not fight them.

5. We are passionate about serving people we value.
